Ever since it began, Manchester City has had some seriously good scorers. From games at Hyde Road, to the Etihad, these forwards have scored goals that have won titles and cups.
Some managed to get the club to league finals in the 1930s, some took home the FA Cup in the 1950s, and the new generation won five Premier Leagues since 2012; goals are what get the team winning.
And these players are the ones who got them in high numbers or big moments like that as we saw at Wembley. This is a list of the top 10 by total goals for the club, as well as the various trophies they won and how they helped the team. Let’s start with the number one.
They say it’s the best. Sergio Aguero. The Argentine moved to Manchester City from Atletico Madrid for £40 million in 2011. He hit 260 goals in 390 games, the club record. He also had 184 in Premier League with 12 hat-tricks, another club record.
His added time double against QPR in 2012 proved decisive. It was the first title for the Citizens in 44 years and still talked about by supporters. He helped win four more leagues , 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021 — one FA Cup, five League Cups and a Community Shield.
In Europe he helped make city big, scoring against Chelsea in the 2021 final but they lost. Aguero was quick and clever. He usually chose to play on the left side of Silva and Thierry De Bruyne and made intelligent passes.
Injury came later but he netted 23 goals in 2014/15 for a Golden Boot. He left in 2021 for Barcelona and Manchester City stopped using his number 10. He made the club big.
Eric Brook held the goal record for 78 years until Aguero beat it. He played as an outside-left from 1928 to 1938 and got 177 goals in 493 games.
He could score from different places. Brook was in Manchester City's first league title in 1937, playing all games and scoring 20 that year. He also helped win the FA Cup in 1934, with goals in the semi and quarter.
His long shot against Stoke in 1934 is one of the best at Maine Road, fans say. Born in 1907, he started at Barnsley, then came to Manchester City for £2,500. He scored 10 or more goals for 11 seasons in a row.
War stopped his career, and he died in 1965 from a car crash in 1940. Manchester City named a bar at the Etihad for him. His work and goals made him a favorite in hard times.
Tommy Johnson is third on the list. He scored 166 goals in 354 games for Manchester City between 1919 and 1930. The inside forward was the club record goalscorer in 1928 when he scored 38 goals in 39 games, including five for the hosts against Everton.
He also scored 31 goals in 1920/21 in Division Two. His goals helped Manchester City gain promotion to the Premier League in 1928 and he scored in the first league game at Maine Road.
The club sold him to Notts County for money but kept him on for a while. A street close to the old stadium is named after him. His left foot was very good and he kept the team going in the 1920s.
Francis Lee was a footballer who played for Manchester City from 1967 to 1974, scoring 148 goals in 330 games. He left Bolton in 1967 for £60, 000. Lee scored 16 goals in 31 matches in 1968, including one against Newcastle in the 4-3 defeat that won the league title.
Manchester City won the 1969 FA Cup, in which Lee scored in the semi-final. He helped them win the 1970 League Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup (with a penalty in the final), becoming known as “Franny the Pen”.
He played in a trio with Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee known as the “Holy Trinity”. Lee won a league title with Derby after this period, and was chairman of Man City in the 1990s. He died on 2023.
Joe Hayes scored in the English Football League for Manchester City from 1953 to 1965, 154 goals in 363 games. He did well in Cup appearances. He started at 17 years old against Spurs and scored in the 1956 FA Cup final in which City won 3-1.
He also played in the 1955 final, but his team lost. His best year on the league front was 1957/58 when he netted 25 in the season, helping City finish fifth.
In 1954/55 he scored 15 goals in 26 games and was a good cup performer. He suffered some injuries and problems in his team-mates but still ended up playing for Barnsley and Wigan later.
Erling Haaland left Dortmund in 2022 for a £60 million transfer to Man City. Haaland is a goal scorer. By October 2025, he is 136 goals in 115 games, 15 of them has come in, in the 2025/26 Premier League season.
His 36 goals in 2022/23 were winning the Golden Boot and he has scored every game. Haaland helped win the Premier League 3 times in a row (2023-2025), won the Champions League in 2023, and won an FA Cup. He plays really strong and finishes really well. Fans love his energy.
Freddie Tilson was a footballer of the 30s Manchester City team who scored 132 goals in 276 games between 1928 and 1938. He was born in Swinton in 1904 and moved from Barnsley to Manchester City for £3, 500 with Eric Brook.
He went on to score 12 goals in 1933/34 including two goals in the FA Cup final against Portsmouth which saw him win the title.
He was the top scorer in 1932/33 with 23 goals and 17 in the league title campaign for 1936/37. He left for Northampton in 1938 with an injury and his heading became a Hall of Fame name.
Alec Herd was a player who played in Manchester City football club from 1929-1939 and scored 110 goals in 272 games as an inside forward.
He scored 17 league titles in the 1936/37 season, one of them in the FA Cup semi-final in 1934. His brother Willie Herd also played at Arsenal football club.
The club signed him for £3, 000, though over a number of seasons he scored 10 or more goals in several league championships and the club won the 1930s.
Denis Tueart played for Manchester City from 1974 to 1983 (with a break in the U. S. (for Cosmos) - and scored 109 goals in 249 games for the club. The city signed him from Sunderland for £275, 000, a record.
His overhead kick saved a replay of Manchester City's 1976 final victory against Newcastle, 2-1 and fans still thinks about. In 1975/76 he scored 24 goals to finish eighth, but came back for 1980, to score 12 in 34 matches, even after relegation.
He won an FA Cup with Sunderland. Tough to forget playing with Beckenbauer in the U. S. and later on as a director helping get Kevin Keegan to Old Trafford. He was a good player in the 1970s.
Neil Young was born near Maine Road and scored 108 goals in 413 games for Manchester City between 1961–71. He was fantastic at big games.
In 1967/68 he scored 21 goals in 48 games, helping City win the league title. He was in the 1969 FA Cup, score two goals in semi-final (versus United, 2-0) and once in the final. His header won the 1970 Cup Winners’ Cup for the club.
There was little else for it for Manchester City that year. Young started at 17 and scored 30 goals in 1969/70. He had an injury-battered career but was a part of the 1960s team, died in 2011 and was admitted to the Hall of Fame.
