1. John B. Thayer II 

John Borland Thayer II was born in Philadelphia in 1862. He was well known for being a good cricketer and a successful businessman. He began playing cricket at the tender age of fourteen. He played for the Philadelphian cricket team after. He played a lot of other sports. He was the captain of the University of Pennsylvania baseball team. His success wasn’t limited to sports. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. His life was cut short in 1912 when the Titanic sank. His contribution to the early days of American cricket is still remembered today.

2. John Ashby Lester 

John Lester was born in Penrith, England in 1871. Later, he moved to Philadelphia, USA. He was very good at playing cricket. After moving to America, he became a main player on the Philadelphia cricket team and the Merion cricket club. He was skilled with his right hand and he could hit the cricket ball slowly. In his 47 big games, he took 57 wickets and also scored 2,552 runs. Apart from being an excellent cricketer, John was also an avid learner. He even received a Ph. .D. degree from the famous Harvard University. He wrote a book called A Century of Philadelphia Cricket, which tells about cricket in Philadelphia over 100 years.

3. Sir James Reginald Conyers 

Sir Reginald Conyers was born in the year 1879. Cricket is a popular sport in America and he was very good at it. He was a member of the Hamilton Cricket Club and played against American teams. This is where he showed his skills. He was so good that he got to play with the Gentlemen of Philadelphia on their trip to Jamaica in 1908-09. In one game, he scored a fantastic 149 runs against Jamaica! This showed his great batting ability. Conyers also helped the Merion Cricket Club, making the cricket friendships between Bermuda and Philadelphia even stronger. Outside of cricket, he was a really good lawyer and political leader. He changed things for the better in his hometown.

4. Ralph Leslie Melville 

The man had a special story. He was born in Scotland. He moved to Philadelphia due to his love for cricket. Between 1917 and 1907, he played for the Merion and Belmont Cricket Clubs. Melville was great at both hitting the cricket ball and throwing it. He even got to play against the Australians in 1913!

But when a big war began, he felt he had to help. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was ready to serve. Sadly, he died of pneumonia in 1919 because of the Spanish flu disease. Melville’s life was full of sports and sacrifice.

Besides being good at cricket, Melville was also known for being kind and being a good leader when he played.

5. Henry Scattergood 

Henry Scattergood was a big fan of cricket in Philadelphia a long time ago. He started playing around the end of the 1800s with the Merion Cricket Club. He helped make cricket popular in that area. From pictures taken in 1897, we can see him playing at Merion. We see how energetic the club’s cricket games were back then. Even though we don’t have exact numbers, we remember how much Scattergood loved the game and his community.

Not only did he play, but Scattergood also helped to organize games and coach new players. He wanted the club to be a place where cricket grew. Scattergood also worked to make the sport more recognized in America.

6. John Lester 

John Lester (not the same as John Ashby Lester) was really important in the Philadelphia counrty cricket club. He played a big part in helping and teaching young players at the Merion Cricket Club. This was happening at the same time he was playing. At the end of the 19th century, we have pictures of Lester playing cricket. This shows how much he loved the sport. He was a leader in the team both during games and when they weren’t playing. This helped the club get a great name in American cricket.  

Lester also did a lot of the work to set up games and tests against teams from other countries. This helped make American cricket more popular. His great ability to organize and think strategically made him a key person in the history of the Merion Cricket Club.

7. Small Lester 

Small Lester, who was possibly related to John Lester, was a famous player in the late 1800s. Even though he didn’t have many records of his big cricket games, many old photos show him at Merion cricket matches. This probably means he played in all of the club’s games. The club’s way of life was typified by family and team spirit.

Even though we don’t have a lot of records, what we know about Small Lester’s role in the club’s early history shows how cricket was a tradition passed down in families in Philadelphia. The love for cricket and the sense of history inside the club are told in it.

8. William Montgomery 

In the fall of 1865, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, two men named William Montgomery and Maskell Ewing started a cricket club. Their club’s name was the Montgomery Club, and they loved cricket very much. Their love for the game made them start the Merion Cricket Club. William Montgomery worked very hard to make the club a place where people could learn and play cricket for many years. His work made this club very important to cricket in America.

9. Maskell Ewing 

A very important person in the formation of the Merion Cricket Club: Maskell Ewing. He and his friend William Montgomery struggled to get it started. Ewing was a great lover of cricket and  sports. He fought so hard to create a place to play the game and promote it in the United States. He did a terrific job of getting (the club) set up, and a lot of important things happened for cricket in America under him.

10. Percy Clark 

But Percy Clark’s name would have been notable even if it were on such a list, one that might have made even the famous Merion Cricket Club even better. Percy was born in 1873. He was among the top players on the cricket squad in Philadelphia. He played games with teams all over the world. Percy was well-loved and known for his ‘leg-spin’ move. Nobody took more wickets than him in big matches. He was a very good cricketer and a lot of people respected him for that.
